Dare to Be Different

This message is dedicated to the non-conformists, the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the weirdos, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes… the unorthodox ones who see and do things differently.

These are the people who choose to live on the wild side, and who beautifully embody Dr Seuss’s quote…“Why fit in when you were born to stand out?”

Let’s get after it fast and hard.

So, why is non-conformity, daring to be different and standing out from the crowd a good thing?

In 1915 Mignon Mclaughlin said, “every society honors its live conformists and cherishes its dead troublemakers.”

We owe all progress, discoveries, and breakthroughs to those who had the courage to be different.

The benefits of non-conformance, of standing out from the crowd include the following:

Authenticity –  You live life on your own terms, completely uncensored, undiluted, and unimpeded by external forces. To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.

Differentiation – You are truly one-of-a-kind as who you are, what you do, how you do it and why make you special and radically different from others.

Originality – You elevate yourself about everyone else with a fresh, unique approach that’s difficult to replicate and impossible to ignore.

Courage – You have the courage of your convictions and allow them to take you to places that most can only dream of. You march to the beat of your own drummer.

In Demand – Due to the uniqueness of what you do both people and opportunity will seek you out and you’ll find your services in greater demand.

Control – Because you’ve chosen to take the road less traveled, you enjoy greater control and mastery over what you do. You are no longer slave to the opinions of others.  You live a blessed live because you exist and operate on your own terms.

Creative Freedom – You demonstrate and enjoy greater freedom of expression as you see your work as a form of art. You are doing what you are passionate about, and what you were born to do. Your heart sings, your personality shines and your spirit soars.

Play to Your Strengths – You no longer have to settle for compensating for weaknesses as those who choose to stand out from the crowd are playing to their strengths. It’s like going to Vegas and you’re playing with loaded dice.

The Consequences of Conformity

Let’s now shift our focus to the costs and consequences of conformance, of fitting in and being part of the crowded field of mediocrity.

The cold, hard disturbing truth is that from the moment you were born…you were unwittingly in the process of being indoctrinated.

Almost every institution that you have ever come in contact with is self-serving and has conformance, manipulation and control baked into their core.

From education to entertainment, from the foods you eat to the music you listen to, from the clothes you wear to the car you drive, from the books you read to the news you watch, and from politics to religion…they all work to get you to drink their version of Koolaid.

They actively and aggressively work to discourage original thought, uniqueness, individuality and differentiation.

The plague of mankind is the fear and rejection of truth. It’s the belief that there is only one right way to live, only one right way to learn, and only one right way to regulate religious, political, sexual, financial and medical affairs.

That belief is the rotten fruit of conformance and the root cause of the greatest threat to mankind.

Yet, while the overwhelming majority of people are working hard to conform and fit in…the smart cookies are doing everything they can to stand out.

They inherently understand that conformity is a sign of weakness, and choose to live their lives authentically…on their own terms, not someone else.

DO NOT CONFORM

You only have one life, and you don’t have to live it the way other people expect you to.

To live life on your own terms…you must avoid following popular opinion, avoid conforming to the weak and highly vulnerable will of the majority, avoid the traps of indoctrination, and most important…avoid the seduction of the comfort zone.

Dare to be different, dare to do something big, bold and beautiful with your life.

Everything Counts!
