Pre-existing conditions.
We all have them.
No, I’m not talking about the ones excluded from your insurance company.
From a performance standpoint there is a much more pervasive, and perhaps, a much more devastating form of pre-existing conditions which we should all concern ourselves with.
I’m talking about the pre-existing conditions that have killed more dreams, hopes, ideas, careers, reputations, marriages and lives than diabetes or cancer ever could.
These pre-existing conditions are the true weapons of mass destruction…the bad habits, behavioral indiscretions, hang ups and self-inflicted acts of sabotage that people have chosen to embrace, display and perpetuate.
These pre-existing conditions are the slow, silent, gradual killers of performance which create massive collateral damage in the form of compromised character, wasted potential and other forms of abuse.
We bring these pre-existing conditions to every new task, opportunity and relationship and wonder why history repeats itself.
Here’s a short list of pre-existing conditions.
Living in fear
Constant worrying
Negative self-talk
Self-doubt
Non-trusting
Excuse making
Insecurity
Anger
Integrity issues
Inconsistency
Apathy
Lying
Laziness
Sarcasm
Tardiness
Inability to focus
Poor self-discipline
Procrastination
Non-committal
Lack of planning
Pre-existing conditions define you, and they have a proven ability to derail you. They are a psychological chokehold, toxic mental and behavioral waste that’s harder to kick than a heroin habit.
However, there is good news along with a very bright light at the end of the tunnel…and if you’re game for a good fight…here’s your medicine.
It’s all begins by getting serious, having an adult conversation with yourself and looking at your actual (not intended) results.
I want you to examine your health, wealth, relationships…everything.
Inspect those results for clues on what you are doing right as those are the only pre-existing conditions and behaviors you want to repeat, on what you did wrong, on what you were thinking, on the habits and patterns that are producing a less than desirable result.
Listen, nobody ever wrote down a plan to be broke, fat, lazy, divorced or stupid.
Those things are what happen when you don’t wake up…when you don’t exercise self-control…when you don’t and examine your behavior…when you don’t take corrective actions.
MAKING CHANGE HAPPEN
It’s easy for me to say that your beliefs and thoughts influence your reality, so change them.
It’s easy for me to say that how you talk about yourself has a monumental impact on your results, so change the conversation.
It’s even easier for me to say that if you keep doing what you’ve been doing, you’ll keep getting what you’ve been getting, so change your behavior.
And…you know what, that’s exactly what I’m going to tell you to do—JUST CHANGE!
I want you to look at your results, right now and repeat after me, results are everything…results are everything…results are everything.
The fact is…your results server as judge, jury and executioner of your performance.
This truth applies universally across the board. No one gets a free pass. We all get measured by the means, as well as the ends of our results.
BEHAVIOR NEVER LIES
Here’s a million dollar coaching tip…
When speaking, coaching, or training, I always look people in the eye and say to them; “don’t tell me what you’re going to do, show me…show me what you’ve already done.”
In order for me to coach you to optimal performance like I do in the 100 Day Challenge, I need to understand what you’ve already accomplished.
I need to examine what pre-existing conditions (positive and negative) led to those accomplishments, or lack thereof for the simple reason that the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior.
Behavior never lies and by examining your results, I can see a clear picture of your commitment, I can gain an innate sense of your character, I can grasp a near perfect understanding of your beliefs, and I can mostly certainly see what you are really made of.
Pre-existing conditions define you…and without making the appropriate changes in your behavior, they will destroy you.
Both success and failure leaves clues, big…fat…significant impressions that tell a story of your actions and reactions, your starts and finishes, your breakdowns and breakthroughs.
Your results are a reflection of what you believe to be true about yourself. Your results tell me how you think, your results tell me how you talk about yourself even when no one’s around, and your results tell me what you do or do not do every single day.
So What’s The Solution?
If you want bigger results, if you want a better life, if you want a far more beautiful future than your past, there’s only one way—JUST CHANGE!
Why? Because if you do not change, you’re condemned to a life consisting of the same beliefs, habits, patterns, and results that you are getting right now.
So, begin today, right now by changing what you think, by changing what you say, and by changing what you do. It’s that simple, it’s that profound, and it’s that important.
It’s not that hard either. Do you remember what you did yesterday?
Well, if you don’t like the results you got yesterday then change what think, say, and do today. Whatever it takes to get better results, you must be willing to give it a go.
In order for you to have a different life, and a far more prosperous future than you’ve had in the past – you actually have to design a better life consisting of positive and proactive pre-existing conditions.
